Wood heating solutions for greenhouse growers

Biomass specialist and boiler manufacturer Hargassner celebrates its 40th anniversary. Last year the company has opened a new North American headquarters in Toronto, invested in local warehousing and hired local staff as part of its overall commitment to meet the needs of its North American customers – especially for Canadian and US greenhouse growers.

“Heating costs are difficult to calculate these days. The supply of fossil fuels is uncertain and harmful to the environment. Operators of greenhouses that heat with those fuels are currently considering scenarios for how they can reduce their costs and dependencies in the future. Hargassner offers a sophisticated, reliable heating technology that is particularly suitable for use on farms that produce fruit and vegetables under glass.”

Facing rising fuel costs Canadians and Americans are searching for sustainable heating options for their homes and businesses. With eco-friendly, carbon-neutral fuel options, biomass boilers – specifically wood heating boilers – are becoming an increasingly popular and economical heating solution. This means that growers and greenhouse operators can reliably supply their production with heat.

Why biomass?

Hargassner boilers for greenhouses primarily burn wood chips. These are carbon-neutral and therefore also fit particularly well into the sustainable concept of businesses for organic products. Wood chips are made of untreated residual wood from domestic forests and the sawmill industry – material that would usually otherwise go to waste. Instead, the material is repurposed into biomass fuel in the form of wood pellets, wood chips or simply processed into usable lengths of wood logs. Using biomass as a fuel source is not only more cost effective than burning oil or gas, but also supports the local economy and recycles waste wood in a sustainable matter.

Tailored biomass heating systems for greenhouses

Hargassner offers an individual biomass boiler system scaled to meet almost every level of demand – from single-family homes up to large scaled installations for farms, greenhouses, hotels and industry. Critically, all boilers in the range are designed to deliver lower heating costs versus conventional oil and gas burning systems.

The company offers solutions from 23 kW (78,500 BTU/h) to 330 kW (1,125,000 BTU/h) and in cascade set-ups (multiple boilers connected together) up to 2 MW (6,700,000 BTU/h).

The replacement process of old heating systems is as follows: The new Hargassner boiler is installed and put into operation to avoid heat gaps. After commissioning, the old system is decommissioned, and the new system takes over heat production.

Cost effective and easy to operate

From an economic point of view, energy costs and environmental regulations are becoming increasingly demanding, so that the new system will have paid for itself in just a few years sometimes even faster.

Hargassner guarantees the lowest possible maintenance requirements and long operational life for its full range of equipment. With the remote control via phone or tablet, customers can easily change settings on their biomass boiler or even check its current status and the temperature in the greenhouses. The user interface is simple and intuitive to operate.

Certified for use in North America

As a global player Hargassner boasts 40 years of experience building biomass boilers with more than 185,000 satisfied clients worldwide. Importantly, company’s biomass boiler systems are officially certified and approved by the U.S. EPA and the CSA.
