Grantstown Nurseries, a second-generation tomato grower in County Waterford, needed a sustainable and cost-efficient heating solution for its one-hectare glasshouses. Rising energy costs and the need to reduce carbon emissions pushed the business to explore alternatives to fossil fuels. The goal was clear: maintain optimal growing conditions while lowering fuel bills and improving environmental performance.

David Currid, owner of Grantstown Nurseries, worked with SEAI under the Support Scheme for Renewable Heat (SSRH). The nursery installed an industrial biomass boiler and successfully applied for the SSRH tariff, which provides quarterly payments for renewable heat over 15 years. A purpose-built shed replaced old oil tanks to house the new wood pellet boiler and fuel storage. This solution not only reduced energy costs by over 35 % but also achieved a payback period of just 3.25 years

"We're producing Irish tomatoes on the Island of Ireland in a carbon-friendly way with virtually no carbon footprint. That's a major benefit."
