Sustainable wood heating further ensured

EU-wide agreement on RED III

The long-awaited agreement on the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) has finally been reached. RED III now provides investment security for biomass installations and allows EU Member States to continue to rely on wood to meet their renewable energy targets. “The EU wanted to reduce the use of energy wood from forests. Now it is still possible for our communities, heating plants and CHP plants to expand,” says Franz Titschenbacher, President of the Austrian Biomass Association.

Hargassner is 100% committed to sustainable and responsible use of the forest. This means that no more timber may be taken from the forest than can grow back – based on defined rules. This protects the forest from overexploitation. As part of RED III, agreement was reached on criteria for biomass to ensure that only energy wood produced in a way that is compatible with nature is promoted. This means that biomass users can be sure that their choice is an active and sustainable contribution to the energy transition.

A pioneer from the start

A passion for nature and technology is alive and well at Hargassner. Now in its second generation, the family-run business in Weng, Upper Austria, is committed to high standards of environmental protection.

Nature is our lifeline. Without a healthy nature, there can be no healthy life. That is why we see ourselves as pioneers in environmentally friendly heating with renewable energy – for the sake of the environment and future generations.

Full service provider for every need

Hargassner has been manufacturing wood chip boilers from the very beginning and pellet boilers for the last twenty-five years. The product range includes output ranges from 9 to 330 kW with a cascade solution up to 2,000 kW. Since 2010, log boilers from 20 to 60 kW have also been manufactured. While the Eco woodchip heating systems for up to 330 kW combine the refinements of the compact system with the finest large boiler technology, the high-performance biomass heating systems of the Hargassner MAGNO series with up to 2.5 MW have been attracting a great deal of attention from industry and local heating stations since 2021.

Now that the EU Commission, the European Parliament and the EU Member States have agreed on the RED III Directive, it only needs to be formally approved by the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, after which it will be up to the Member States to implement the RED III Directive in an unbureaucratic and practical manner. Biomass pioneers like Hargassner are ready to play their part.

Our vision is to support the energy transition with our heating technology as an important component for the sustainable use of biomass.
