“Wood Energy Award” for the ship MS Mondseeland

Silver for floating pellet boiler
on Biomass Day

Hargassner has been a pioneer in biomass technology and innovation for almost 40 years.

Our many projects and references speak for themselves. A sustainable pellet heating system for the passenger ship “MS Mondseeland” was recently awarded silver in the pellet category of the Austrian Biomass Association’s “Wood Energy Award 2023”.

The Austrian Biomass Association organises an annual award in the categories of wood logs, wood chips and pellets. The motto of the “Holzenergiepreis” (Wood Energy Award) is “Good warmth grows back“. The competition is open to both private individuals and companies. Projects from fuel or plant production, as well as construction and end-user projects of all sizes can be submitted. They must be related to wood energy based on wood chips, wood logs or pellets. This year’s competition again saw a high level of participation from industry, organisations, the education sector and private individuals.

One-of-a-kind project

The project for a compact Hargassner pellet heating system for the Lake Mondsee flagship “MS Mondseeland” was also submitted by Schifffahrt Meindl.

The passenger ship was getting on in years and could no longer be heated properly or in an environmentally friendly way in winter. The owner therefore planned a general refurbishment for 2022. Together with efficient insulation, the aim was to increase the average temperature in the cabins by at least 10 degrees.

Biomass for flagship

The MS Mondseeland carries 150 passengers and is the largest passenger ship on Lake Mondsee. In winter, the renovated panorama cabin welcomes guests with cosy warmth. The ship’s hull hides Hargassner’s “seaworthy” pellet heating system. Sustainability was the guiding principle for the general refurbishment in 2022.

A compact 12.2 kW Hargassner Nano-PK pellet boiler was chosen. Together with a Hargassner accumulator system and a pellet storage container, it guarantees a significant improvement in the ship’s ecological footprint.

Such a unique project is not carried out primarily to win awards. So we are all the more delighted to have received this unexpected silver award. We also expect to save around seven to eight tonnes of CO2 per year. And all this with very cheap fuel. In other words, a multiple positive effect.

Award ceremony on Biomass Day

At the award ceremony of the 24th Austrian Biomass Day in Wieselburg on the 8th of November, all the winning projects were presented with their prizes by Christoph Pfemeter, Managing Director of the Austrian Biomass Association.

The winning projects were selected from around 100 submissions by an expert jury chaired by Dr. Josef Rathbauer, BLT Wieselburg.

This award proves that pellet central heating systems have by no means exhausted their potential. Small boilers such as the Nano-PK in particular can be used in places where space is at a premium – in corridors, alcoves or even in the narrow engine rooms of ships. This clearly sets the Nano-PK apart from bulky cellar boilers.
