Sustainable heating for the Nordic Ski World Champs in Trondheim

When more than 800 athletes from over 60 countries travelled to Trondheim for the Nordic World Ski Championships in February 2025, the focus was not only on sport – sustainability also played a key role. The organisers opted for renewable energy to heat the major event – with biomass heating systems from Hargassner.

Emissions-free heat from wood instead of fossil fuels

With the ambitious goal of becoming ‘the most sustainable World Championships ever’, the organisers of the Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim deliberately opted for a practical alternative to oil heating. Instead, they used powerful biomass heating systems from Hargassner. Together with Norwegian distribution partner Hargassner Norge, several mobile heating containers were installed on the event site – equipped with powerful wood chip and pellet heating systemsof the Eco-HK and Eco-PK types. In addition, storage containers for wood chips and pellets were installed to ensure a seamless supply of sustainable natural fuel.

This meant that the VIP and public tents in Granåsen could be reliably heated even in freezing temperatures. The heat was distributed via modern warm air modules with intelligent control technology, which ensured consistent temperatures.

Sustainability as a lived responsibility

“It was fantastic for us to be able to use our heating containers at the World Championships on home turf. It was absolutely fantastic and a huge step forward for the environment. Heating the tents in this way drastically reduced our greenhouse gas emissions.”

Ola Rønning | Sustainability Manager for the World Ski Championships in Trondheim

Compared to the 2011 World Ski Championships in Oslo, switching to wood chips saved around 754 tonnes of CO₂ – a milestone in environmentally friendly event planning.

To illustrate:

This CO₂ saving is equivalent to approximately

  • 80 laps around the earth in a diesel car
  • the annual heating requirements of 1,164 households in Norway

Hargassner: Heating technology with vision

For Hargassner, the project in Trondheim was further proof of the practical suitability of modern biomass heating systems – even in the mobile event sector. The combination of performance, flexibility and environmental awareness made the systems the ideal choice for large-scale events with high demands. With this contribution to green energy supply, Hargassner once again underlined its role as a pioneer in sustainable heating solutions – and as a reliable partner for a climate-friendly future.

Sustainable heat supply was an essential part of a holistic sustainability concept that sets new standards and will certainly serve as a model for future World Cup events.
