Our commitment to bees and the future

Bees are invaluable to our ecosystem: almost 80% of all crops and wild plants are pollinated by honey bees. In order to support and protect these fascinating animals, we have set up ten beehives on our premises and are actively involved in the Beekeeping Group Upper Austria-Salzburg.
Our goal: To ensure the continued existence of healthy bees – naturally and sustainably.

Breeding resistant bees

One of the biggest threats to bees is the Varroa mite. If a colony is infected, it can collapse completely within a short time. Together with experienced beekeepers and the Weng Beekeepers’ Association, we therefore specifically support the breeding of varroa-tolerant bees. Modern methods such as the artificial insemination of queens ensure that resistance traits are passed on in a targeted manner – without the use of chemicals or other aggressive treatments.
Our vision: Beekeeping like in our great-grandfather’s time – close to nature, sustainable and chemical-free.

Research and innovation

Since 2019, regular breeding projects and counts have been taking place on our company premises. In May and June, queen bees are artificially inseminated under microscopes, followed by the important evaluation of the colonies in August. Initial successes are already visible: bee colonies have been identified that naturally develop resistance to the Varroa mite.
The advantages of this breeding are obvious: no pesticides in the honey, longer bee performance and an important contribution to preserving our food diversity.

Breeding against the varroa mite

Hargassner - We stand up for bees!

Bees are the true heroes of our natural world: they pollinate almost 80 % of all crops and wild plants, thus ensuring our food supply and biodiversity. But their future is under threat! Hargassner is therefore fully committed to protecting bees.

Together with the Bienenzuchtgruppe OÖ-Sbg and the Weng Beekeepers’ Association, we are committed to a revolution in beekeeping: the breeding of resistant, varroa-tolerant bees – without any chemicals! We have already set important milestones with exciting workshops, Europe-wide dialogue and an international bee symposium. Our goal: healthy bees, happy beekeepers and a sustainable honey yield.
