Our solution
Drying wood chips using solar roof extraction, burner technology and an Eco-HK wood chip boiler system from Hargassner with 330 kW output.

The Gradinger family from Mühlheim has been focussing on innovative and sustainable solutions for crop drying for years. In order to meet the increasing demands for efficiency and environmental protection, the drying technology was expanded to include a modern wood chip boiler with a solar drying system. This makes it possible to significantly reduce the use of fossil fuels while ensuring the quality of the maize drying process.
Innovative crop drying
The Gradinger family’s farm in Mühlheim am Inn (Upper Austria) focusses on efficient maize drying. The drying solution combines an existing oil drying system with a powerful Eco-HK 330 wood chip boiler from Hargassner and a solar roof extraction system.
The air drawn in by the circulation dryers is preheated to approx. 50 °C with the help of the wood chip boiler. Only then is it heated by the oil burner to the 100 °C required for drying the maize. This system enables savings of up to 50 % in fossil energy. A significant step towards sustainability and cost reduction.
Sustainable and well thought out
The Gradinger family has been focussing on the solar drying of wood chips for over ten years. The wood chips from the own forest are dried to a water content of approx. 20% on a sloping floor with roof extraction. The result: a perfect energy source for the wood chip boiler. In this way, regional wood is turned into a high-quality fuel for crop drying.
Short distances and high efficiency: The new heating system with layered accumulator (8,000 litres) and separate wood chip storage is directly connected to the drying system. The Eco-HK wood chip boiler with a thermal output of 330 kW feeds an air heat exchanger, which heats around 40,000 m³ of air to approx. 50 °C. Further heating to 100 °C is achieved with oil. This saves fossil fuels, reduces emissions and significantly increases the efficiency of the maize drying process.</p
