Hargassner wood chip power:

Wood chip boiler for drying harvested crops

At the Mairhofer farm in Pötting (Upper Austria), an innovative drying system ensures efficient energy and heat utilisation. A Hargassner wood chip boiler and photovoltaics provide up to 500 kW of heating power for drying hay, lucerne, maize and wood chips. State-of-the-art hay crane technology enables the gentle and effective shifting of the drying goods.

Crop drying with converted hay crane

Four drying boxes, each with a drying area of 28 m³, define a modern drying plant for bulk goods and grassland crops such as lucerne at the Mairhofer farm in Pötting (Upper Austria). The farm specialises in feed pelleting. Due to the different materials to be dried, the company relies on hay crane technology for the shifting of the harvested material and for the entire filling and removal process. This means that an agitator system can be dispensed with for bulk material, as this is shifted by crane.

The thermal energy of the Hargassner Eco-HK wood chip boiler, which is located in a separate heating module including an accumulator tank in the outdoor area, is transferred to a central accumulator tank via a district line. This accumulator tank serves as load balancing, with the fan (ventilator) absorbing the energy from the heat exchanger and distributing it evenly to the flat grate drying system.

The entire system is also combined with a photovoltaic system, creating a hybrid solution. The photovoltaic energy from the 300 kW roof panels is additionally charged into the accumulator tank by a 180 kW electric furnace. This means that the two systems together can provide up to 500 kW of heating power for drying.
