Local district heating network Ammerthal Bavaria (Germany)

The task
The requirements:
- Away from fossil fuels
- Heating of community and public buildings and subsequently private households
- Economical solution
Our solution
An idea for a centralised biomass heat generation turned into a large-scale local heating network project:
- 1 x Hargassner industrial heating Magno-VR 399 kW
- 1 x Eco-HK 330 kW wood chip boiler
- Total output of 840 kW in total
- Heat supply for the municipality, public buildings and 45 households
- Replacement of 150,000 litres of oil – saving 410 t CO2
Magno-VR 399 industrial heating system and Eco-HK 330 for the Ammerthal local heating network
District heating network Ammerthal was founded to heat its public buildings independently of fossil fuels. This resulted in a large-scale biomass project, founded by installer and biomass specialist Michael Rädle. Since opening in early summer 2025, the system has been supplying around 45 households and several public buildings such as the school, town hall, kindergarten, fire station and building yard with renewable energy using a Hargassner Eco-HK 330 (basic supply) and a Magno-VR 399 (peak load in winter).
With a total output of 840 kW, it provides space heating and hot water. The system saves around 150,000 litres of heating oil or 410 tonnes of COâ‚‚ per year and still has residual capacity for further connections.

Regional foresters supply local heating network
Economical through wood waste
“The fact that we can operate the system with a wide variety of wood qualities makes the concept highly economical. The insensitivity to the properties of the wood chips and the water content means that we can also use material with a residual moisture content of up to 60%,” says Michael Rädle. To do this, he buys the residual material from regional forest owners such as forest farmers’ associations, foresters or even state forests within a radius of 25 kilometres, chops and transports it himself. The local heating plant in Ammerthal needs around 1800 cubic metres of woodchippings for an entire year – at 40 cubic metres per load, that’s just 45 lorries full for the whole year.
A small insight
Hargassner industrial heaters for high-performance operation
The Magno-VR 399-600 impresses with maximum ease of use, state-of-the-art technology and outstanding design. It is also one of the most advanced biomass industrial heating systems in its output class in terms of fuel flexibility and energy efficiency. The powerful boilers achieve an output of 10 MW in cascade – i.e. connected in series. This corresponds to the heating requirements of up to 1,000 households.
